This past week we had Grandma and Grandpa in town for a visit. While they were here, we decided to share with them one of Bruiser and Sparkles’ favorite places to hang, the Noah Webster Library in West Hartford!
I absolutely love this outing for many reasons, but mostly because:
- It is FREE
- It has a separate baby room and
- I always pick up something fun for myself (juicy book, movie, recipe book, etc.)
Yes going to the library is fun (I know, I’m dorky like that 🙂
So now that you are fired up to go, let me give you the details for getting from your car to cozying up with a good book and your little one in the baby room.
First of all, we parked in the Isham Garage. [It is located on Isham road and is the one near Whole Foods. If you are a user of the library, you can get your parking ticket validated for 2 hours. Check here for more parking info.] The babies were loaded up in the double jogging stroller and we made our way to the library. We entered on the ground level near Barnes and Noble and took the elevator to the Lower Level. And, yes, my double stroller and two people fit in the elevator!
Now, normally because I have two kids that can’t walk yet, I roll them in their stroller all the way back to the baby room. However, since I had the grandparents and my husband with me we were able to carry the babies and leave the stroller in the hallway (like the nice sign requests).
We headed towards the back of the Children’s section, through the door marked “Preschool Room” and made our way to the Baby Room.
The baby room is great because it is a separate, gated area only for the little ones. There is padding everywhere and lots of fun toys for the kids.
How many adults does it take to watch two 7 month old twins?
Sparkles LOVED all the mirrors in the room. She would just look at herself and giggle, giggle, giggle.
Bruiser liked the mirrors as well, but he was mostly interested in plowing his way through the big, stuffed castle-like structure.
After a quick break for diaper changes (note there is a baby changing station in the bathroom), the sweet babies decided to hang out.
Uh-oh, there seems to be a tussle over a very exciting toy . . .
My sign that it is time to go.
So we started packing up the crew.
Before we headed out, though, I took a few shots of the rest of the Children’s department. It is loaded with fun things for children of all ages to enjoy. You can also check out their online schedule of children’s programs. Here is a link to the fall schedule.
We picked out a few new books to check out.
And asked the librarian to validate our parking ticket.
But instead of my usual next step which is heading to the main floor for some book perusing and to check again to see if Bossy Pants is in (I can’t wait to read that book!), we decided to head across the street to Friendly’s for some yummy ice cream.
Quick shot of the babies and their grandparents in front of the Noah Webster statue (that contains what seems to be a disproportinately large pointer finger).
and went to get some ice cream.
Sweet picture below. This is what 42 years of marriage looks like . . . still happy to be sharing a hot fudge sundae.

What a great site! While at the West Hartford library today, I took my little one to pick up some books and venture into the baby room. Before your post, I didn’t know it existed and I’m so glad we found it! We had a blast! At six months old, there was a lot for my little guy to enjoy, and there’s plenty to explore as he grows. Thank you for telling me (and the rest of CT : )) about it.
I’ll definitely be passing this site along to my other “mommy friends”!

Heather – I’m so glad that you got a chance to check out the baby room. It was our go-to place when my twins were little. I really need to update my post on Noah Webster because they have made a lot of improvements to the play area since this post!
