2020 Post:
I was feeling a little down last Saturday. The weather was gorgeous and we really wanted to spend some time outside (preferably somewhere other than our backyard). Normally, this is a splendid time of year for being out and about– pumpkin patches, corn mazes, hayrides, fairs and festivals. But not this year. Just about every annual fall event I searched was cancelled for this COVID fall 2020.
To lift our spirits, we thought we’d go for some ice cream. Someplace where we could linger outside and enjoy some communal togetherness…6 feet apart, of course.
So we headed over to Main Street Creamery in the heart of Old Wethersfield.
Funny story. When we moved to the Hartford area nearly 15 years ago, we almost bought a house right over here near Main Street. I guess it’s a good thing we didn’t or I would be eating this ice cream every day!
Old Wethersfield is the epitome of New England Charm: historic houses; small shops; businesses in old buildings. And nestled down the street from the stately brick home of another one of our favorite Old Wethersfield haunts, Heirloom Market at Comstock Ferre, is an unassuming little blue house that is practically legendary for serving up delicious ice cream.
As you can see, parking is aplenty on Main Street down here in Old Wethersfield. And the walkable streets offer plenty of opportunity for a leisurely stroll.
Since I knew that strolling before ice cream would be practically guaranteed to yield an unending whine session, we headed straight for the source.
As expected, there were plenty of social distancing rules in place, including a one-at-a-time in the store policy with a clearly marked socially distant queue forming outside.
Additionally, the indoor area is closed for sitting.
The menu board is located outside, making it very easy to decide on your order prior to entering, thereby minimizing the time needed indoors.
Looks like they have some pretty delicious offerings in celebration of the fall season! Yummm.
Once inside, the process moved quickly as expected. Having settled on our flavors outside, we just needed to select our sizes. Please note that it is CASH ONLY. But there is an ATM located inside.
As luck would have it, a bench seat opened up just in time to receive us and our drippy ice cream (don’t forget to grab napkins!).
Happy kids eating ice cream. That’s more like it 🙂
What comes next is up to you! A stroll down the block. Head over to Standish Park and Mikey’s Place Playground. Duck into Heirloom Market.
In a few weeks Wethersfield’s Annual Scarecrow’s Along Main Street event starts up as well, giving you some additional entertainment mileage from this outing. (Check out our blog post about it here.)
We might have to look a little harder for fall fun this season, but I promise, it’s still out there 🙂

Love this place! The ice cream is dangerously good! Note that you can pay with cash or Venmo, which is now becoming my favorite way to pay. All their venmo info is posted at the register and it takes 2 seconds to go through. It makes a little cash register ding sound on their end, and they tell you you’re all set. Too easy and no cash needed!

Thanks so much, Lauren! That’s a great tip and it certainly will make things easier. I didn’t even notice it! Thanks again!
