2020 Post:
We’ve definitely been spending more time at home this year than we have in the 9+ years since we debuted this blog. It’s been quite a change! Especially for my kids who have grown up with the constant excitement of getting to go someplace new for “mommy’s blog.”
We are doing our best to take advantage of all this home time. The boys have become avid bakers. And of course now that fall has arrived we can’t resist making anything pumpkin (stock up on that canned pumpkin now before it’s gone!). Like these amazing Pumpkin S’mores Cookies (which happen to be grain-free and also dairy-free if you get yourself some vegan chocolate chips).
And our old favorite: Baked Pumpkin Doughnuts.
We also tested a recipe for short-cut Pumpkin Blondies which includes just three ingredients: 1 can of pumpkin puree, 1 bag of Betty Crocker Chocolate Chip cookie mix (we actually used the Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie mix because that’s what I had on hand), and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Just mix it all together, spread the batter into an 8×8 pan and bake for 20-25 minutes at 350. So easy and so yummy! (I may have even let the kids eat them for breakfast….shhhhhhh.)
With all this constant baking, I am always on the lookout for ways to increase our outdoor activity and exercise. So last weekend, I brought my crew along for a stroll down Main Street in Old Wethersfield to visit the dozens of creative and amusing scarecrows that have lined that festive section of road every October for decades!
2020 marks the 25th year of this much-anticipated annual event, which draws visitors from near and far. Mandy and I visited waaaaaay back in 2012 when our oldest children were still mostly stroller-bound. Back then, it was more of an excuse for the two of us to get some fresh air and a little exercise (and probably coffee, there was generally coffee involved in those early outings!).
I was excited to bring back my kids now that they are all old enough to enjoy the scarecrows as much as I do 🙂
It was a glorious day, sunny and warm, so I couldn’t deny the kids a scoop at Main Street Creamery before we started our walk. Their fall flavors are in full swing!
Hubby and I were also looking forward to picking up a fancy coffee beverage next door at Heirloom Market (hmmm, guess that coffee part has remained pretty much constant throughout parenthood–LOL).
If we’d gotten our act together earlier in the day, we might have even grabbed lunch there. The menu looks delicious. (There are many other places to grab a quick bite along the route as well– all of them offering to-go and/or socially distanced outdoor seating right now.)
The Scarecrows are lined up along both sides of Main Street, roughly between Garden Street and Hartford Avenue.
The creativity knows no bounds! And we saw everything from a Harry Potter-themed gathering, to an homage to Dr. Seuss, to–and this was probably the boys’ favorite–Captain Underpants!
I was partial to this Hocus Pocus diorama. (Best movie ever!)
A few more gems:
I won’t show you too many. After all, the fun is in discovering them yourself!
The Scarecrows will standby until November 1st. So gather up your boys and ghouls (I couldn’t resist!) and spend an enjoyable morning or afternoon in the heart of Old Wethersfield.
The baking can wait until you get back 😉

How long does a “stroll” take? I have some mobility issues at the moment. Thanks.

Hi Renae! It’s really only a few blocks so it’s not too far of a walk. It mostly depends on how long you want to stop and admire the scarecrows 🙂 Also, the area near the Main Street Creamery has some benches which could come in handy if you’re looking for a place to rest. Hope that helps!
