If you follow our blog, you know that a little over a week ago we set out to introduce you to some family-friendly destinations recommend by one of our Out and About Mom readers (thanks again, Dina!).
Our last adventure found us sewing adorable gnomes at Hartford Stitch. This weeks pick: pottery at The Firestone in Manchester, CT!
Similar to other studios we’ve sampled (like Glaze in Glastonbury), The Firestone offers a variety of paint-your-own pottery options. But the neat thing about this studio, is that it also offers the option to work with wet clay! That means you don’t just paint that piece of pottery–you make it too!
Dina writes:
In keeping with the creative theme, we headed to The Firestone on Main Street in Manchester. This is a paint our own pottery studio, which also offers wet clay classes. This was a joy to participate in because we learned how to use a potter’s wheel and were able to make our own bowls!
Now normally, we’d provide you with lots of interior and exterior pictures of this venue to help with your planning, but I’m guessing it would have been pretty difficult for Dina to get any of those shots while elbow deep in wet clay! So we’ll give her a pass 🙂
I did find quite a few on Google HERE. So check them out! You can also get more info and see more pics of the studio in Audrey’s Post about their Toddler Time Story & Craft events.
Pottery isn’t the only thing cooking at The Firestone. It’s also a cafe! (See the menu here.) Plus you’ll find additional artsy opportunities like wood sign making, canvas painting and glass fusing (pottery painting, wood sign making and canvas painting are available daily on a walk-in basis, while glass fusing and wet clay require advance reservations).
The Firestone offers wet clay “Try It Nights” as well as a 6-week wet clay course for kids and even a camp! Find details on their events page.
Another bonus as the weather warms? The Firestone is right up the street from one of my family’s FAVORITE playgrounds, Charter Oak Park.
And actually, come to think of it, last fall my family set out to explore the Cheney Rail Trail, also nearby. It was an easy family walk–even for my 3-year-old! With plenty of interesting bridges to keep the kids entertained. Which reminds me, it’s time to write that post! Stay tuned… 😉
In the meantime though, hope you make it to The Firestone with your family soon. If you do, let me know if there are any tips I should consider before my family visits. We’d love to have your comments below!
